To Be Told by Dan B. Allender, Ph.D.

(A Book Review)

By Kim Pitman

Have you ever considered that God has invited you to coauthor your future? This is how Dan Allender begins his book, to be told. What's your story? Have you ever considered writing your story?
"Everyone has a story. Put another way, everyone's life is a story. But most people don't know how to read their life in a way that reveals their story. They miss the deeper meaning in their life, and they have little sense of how God has written their story to reveal himself and his own story."

Dr. Allender begins by reminding us that not only is God the Creator of our lives; he is the author of our life as well. In all our lives is written God's divine story. Our lives not only reveal who we are but "they also help reveal who God is."  Our lives are not random scenes that pile up like snowflakes on the ground. Our stories have "unique characters, surprising plot twists, central themes, tension and suspense, and deep significance."  As we begin to examine our stories we can join God as co-authors of our stories.

An interesting concept, I believe. I began Dr. Allender's book thinking that it was about how to write my story, literally. Writing that story is part of what the book is about. But even more the book is about examining our lives to see where God is working and where He wants us to go and what He wants us to do. And as we discover the answers to these questions we can join God in writing our life stories.

Chapter titles include:
1. The Tale to Be Told
2. What's Your Real Name?
3. What Makes a Good Story?
4. Listening to What Moves You
5. Facing the Tragedy That Shapes You
6. Getting Caught By Your Calling
7. Writing Your Destiny
8. Editing Together
9. Story Feasting
10. Prayer That Reveals
11. The Fruit of Fasting
12.  Giving Away Your Story

Did you know that God has a new name for you? Yes, according to Dr. Allender when we reach heaven God will give us a new name that is a description of who we are. Thinking of what your new name might be? This is just one of the many interesting and surprising concepts that Dr. Allender writes about in this entertaining and life-changing book. Are you ready? Let's get writing!
