Praising and Singing

By Kim Pitman

I love to sing. I’m not good at it. But I love to sing. Especially praise songs. Music is one way that I can worship with total abandon. Through one song or another I can express my need to my Father or I can express my love for my Father. I’m sure that I am an amusing sight as I drive down the highway singing with all my heart loudly lifting my joy to God.

Sometimes when I’m feeling down singing certain songs can express my need for my Father. Lots of times with tears streaming I’m asking the Lord to draw me close and hold me tight because otherwise I’m going to come apart at the seams. It’s like praying for me. Sometimes when I’m in a joyful mood I make up a song to sing, thanking my Savior for saving me.

I always sang to and with my children when they were young. I find myself singing to my granddaughters when I’m holding them. Sometimes I sing “Jesus Loves Me.” Taylor, my oldest granddaughter (she’s 2 ½), sings with me. The sound of her little voice singing just thrills my soul. I took her to Preschool VBS at our church this past spring. Listening to her sing, “I love vacation Bible school, I love vacation Bible school, telling Bible stories and the other things we do, I love vacation Bible school” brings tears to my eyes as I pray for her to learn to love Jesus and want to follow Him.

The book of Psalm is full of songs written my David and others. Some are praising God, some are pleading with God, some question God and His ways. All recognize the sovereignty of our Father. I love the Psalm that talks about playing the cymbals and other instruments. Singing and playing to praise God! It’s what I picture Heaven being like. All of His children continuously singing praises to God Almighty forever and forever. Dancing around His throne with arms and voices uplifted in loud adoration of His greatness.

But why wait until you get to Heaven? Start the continuous thankful singing now! Start singing around the dinner table instead of just saying a prayer. Teach your children to lift their voices in loud hosannas. Stop being so self-conscious and with total lack of restraint give yourself to your Lord.

“I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.” Psalm 9:1-2
