Chaos with a Capital "K"

Chaos with a Capital “K”

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of the season. My “to-do” list seems only shortened by the number of items I’ve missed. For every item I do scratch off the list by accomplishment or expiration, I replace with two or three more items. Every waking hour seems to be like a never ending ping-pong match in my head. One thought bounces to another thought, then that thought spirals back to another. I’m even finding my hours when I am asleep are almost as chaotic as my hours awake.  My dreams seem to be my subconscious reminding me to add things to my list: gift ideas, activities, more gift ideas, Christmas cards, business meetings, phone calls, more gift ideas, time with treasured friends, groceries, budgeting, work projects, goals for next year, more gift ideas, church meetings and events, memories of loved ones, schedules, traditions, more gift ideas, etc. Day and night, I seem to be bombarded with chaos.

Somewhere there is peace.

The King of Peace.

It’s now that I remember my King. Was He even on my list? Where was He in my chaotic thoughts and plans? First? Last? Nowhere? Where is He in my day or night? First? Last? Somewhere in between?  Not at all? Will Christmas still turn over on the calendar if I don’t get that card written or that gift bought? Yes. Will we starve if I wait an hour to start grocery shopping? No.  Will the chaos stop if I put my King first? No. Will I have peace through my chaos? Yes.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus tells us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Did I first seek His Kingdom in my life? All my needs, and maybe a few of my wants on my list, are met by God when He’s the King of my day, my night, my hour, my list.

So, it’s just a few more days until Christmas. When I realize my ping-pong thoughts have bounced me away from peace again, it’s time to spell the chaos in my life with a capital “K” – for my King of Peace.

Lord, you are my God. You have given order to all of creation. Give me your order to my priorities for this day. But, let it begin with your reign in my heart. Let me center on your peace for me, not my desires for myself.
